Healthcare FMs, stalwarts of the environment, will rethink clean at the Worldwide Cleaning Association show, ISSA, in Las Vegas, Nov. 13-16

by Eileen McMorrow

The pressure for hospitals to be the most sanitary environments to halt the spread of germs and bacterial infections is paramount for all infection preventionists and hospital facilities staff. Clean is a daily concern for all facility and housekeeping staff.

Created to deliver impactful solutions to the global cleaning and sanitation community, ISSA Show North America 2023 will feature the latest products and innovations, access to education, and ways to engage with peers and industry leaders on critical topics facing cleaning professionals. In Las Vegas, November 13-16, the show is designed to help cleaning managers and professionals improve their career, better manage the healthcare facility needs and learn about the latest cleaning technology.

ISSA’s Healthcare Track offers a range of topics to empower healthcare FMs to understand the power of clean while also making wise decisions about the skills they need to manage housekeeping and meet patient needs. Among the sessions that The McMorrow Reports Healthcare recommends:

Does Environmental Services or Housekeeping Really Play a Part in the Patient or Guest Experience? Michael Patterson, MNA, MRESE-MT, executive director at IEHA, a div. of ISSA.

Cleaning for Health Workshop: Helping Essential Cleaners Identify Reservoirs for Germs. This free three-hour workshop is ideal for frontline facility service professionals in the commercial, industrial, residential and all other sectors within the cleaning industry. The workshop closes gaps in current protections and controls for diseases transmissible by contact, droplet, and aerosol, of which frontline cleaners can be particularly vulnerable. Cleaning businesses can grow and prosper by knowing the reservoirs for germ survival and spread and by viewing ourselves as managers of safety and health in the built environment. All attendees will receive a digital ISSA Certificate of Attendance.

Should You Fear the Floor or Cleaning Environment? Have you ever asked yourself are the floors and carpet safe from an infection control standpoint?  Appearance can be deceiving. Don’t be fooled, the floors and carpet can harbor bacteria, contaminants and even major bugs such as Clostridium Difficile (C-Diff). How many times have you cleaned and disinfected the floors and carpeted areas and didn’t properly wear personal protective equipment (PPE) because the floor and carpeted areas looked clean? During this presentation we will discuss infection control and the superbugs that you may not know exist, how long they can live on surfaces, chemicals needed to clean during the process and what you can do to protect yourself and team during the cleaning process. Michael Patterson, MNA, MRESE-MT, executive director at IEHA, a div. of ISSA.

Disinfectants: What’s in Your Bucket? Over the past decade there has been an unprecedented increase in new/modified disinfection products designed to decontaminate equipment  and environment surfaces. For such tasks, novel modes of supply have also increased, such that disinfectants can now be delivered via a vapor, mist, or aerosol (hydrogen peroxide), electrostatically charged, or as light beams (ultraviolet light). Darrel Hicks, owner/principal, Darrel Hicks.

Building Service Contractors: The State of Industry Panel.

How Do You Measure the ROI of IAQ? Dinesh Wadhwani is an air quality expert and serial entrepreneur in the technology and life sciences industry. Wadhwani is the founder and CEO of ThinkLite and works closely with Fortune 500 companies, townships, and enterprises across the globe to improve IAQ.

  • Learn about what is in the air we breathe and the critical safety metrics you need to be aware of to gauge air safety.
  • Learn about the current state of the indoor air quality monitoring and purification market.
  • Understand the key factors an educational facility must look for to select an effective technology/solution to truly protect its students, faculty, and facilities from airborne transmission and infection.
  • Learn how an organization can calculate its return on investment (ROI) in clean air. With tradeoffs between capital and operational expenditures versus occupant safety.

Embracing Disruption: The Potential of Robotic Automation and Augmented Reality in Facilities Management. There is an opportunity to fully integrate facility management systems using service robots and smart technologies, which can lead to increased productivity, cost reduction and the development of better value-added information. One innovative approach is the use of Robotic Automation and Augmented Reality to handle repetitive and hazardous tasks, freeing up personnel for more complex and skilled jobs. The session highlights the benefits of these technologies and offers suggestions for how FM leaders can successfully implement them. Jon Hill, CEO, Cobotiq.

Utilizing Air Purification to Address Cleaner, Safer & Healthier Environments with Doug Hoffman of NORMI. Clean work environments, IAQ and ESG are aligning as employers seek multiple ways to meet goals for Environmental, Social Responsibility & Governance, which has its own track:

Scope 3 is Here, and We Need to Talk. Seminar session on how our industry needs to start disclosing the GHG Scope 3 emissions that are indirect emissions related to the value chain and activities connected to either suppliers or clients. These emissions are beyond the direct control of the company itself. On average, 75% of all company emissions are indirect and can be defined as scope 3 emissions. Thirty-minute presentation by Malena Thiele, with inspirational Nilfisk examples and 15 minutes for opening the discussion and questions.
